The sheltering sky novel7/8/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The Sheltering Sky is Bernardo Bertolucci's retrospective view of the western psyche of the 1940's from the standpoint of the 1990's. Ladson Hinton, “The Abyss of Heaven,” The San Francisco Jung institute Library Journal, 2006, 25:4, 61-67. It set the stage for Bertolucci's next film, Little Buddha. ![]() However, the dreaming presence of the human imagination - of author, director and audience - provides rays of hope for the future. The drama leaves us with deep uncertainties about the possibility of meaning and the plight of western culture. They end, respectively, in death and madness. The couple, played by John Malkovich and Debra Winger, steadily loses a sense of personal and cultural identity as they travel more deeply into North Africa. Outstanding cinematography with images of desert and sky underline this mystery. The 'sheltering sky' motif ironically conveys an illusory comfort, perhaps an innocence that has been lost. Their experiences of the 'exotic other' often display an exploitive quasi-colonial mentality. Rather than reflecting upon and facing the unknown, they try to fill the void of meaning with compulsive 'travels'. The protagonists are 'sophisticated' New Yorkers: a couple deeply discontented with their marriage and lives, and their 'playboy' friend. The San Francísco Jung Instítute Líbrary Journal, 2006, 25:4, 61–67. ![]()

![]() ![]() It is the dream of many a writer to see their characters brought to life by actors on screen. Writing the scripts was in a sense weaving these stories together, the stories which I had pulled out of history-weaving them back together, through time, going from one woman to the other. That’s how I wrote the novels, each through the eyes of a single, very important woman. ![]() Those show the events, going back in time, from the birth of Henry Tudor right up to his arrival in England at Bosworth, through the eyes of the three most important women of the time. After talking a lot about it, what emerged is that I wanted to a series based on the three books: The White Queen, The Red Queen, and The Kingmaker’s Daughter. Well, a number of producers came to me wanting to do television or a film based on The White Queen. Tell me about how that particular book was chosen and what the process of preparing the script for the series was like for you. The White Queen has recently appeared as a television series. ![]()

Origin Story by David Christian7/6/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() In Origin Story, Christian takes readers on a wild ride through the entire 13.8 billion years we've come to know as "history." By focusing on defining events (thresholds), major trends, and profound questions about our origins, Christian exposes the hidden threads that tie everything together - from the creation of the planet to the advent of agriculture, nuclear war, and beyond. These were the questions David Christian set out to answer when he created the field of "Big History," the most exciting new approach to understanding where we have been, where we are, and where we are going. But what would it look like to study the whole of history, from the big bang through the present day - and even into the remote future? How would looking at the full span of time change the way we perceive the universe, the earth, and our very existence? ![]() Most historians study the smallest slivers of time, emphasizing specific dates, individuals, and documents. In Origin Story, he elegantly weaves evidence and insights from many scientific and historical disciplines into a single, accessible historical narrative." -Bill GatesĪ captivating history of the universe - from before the dawn of time through the far reaches of the distant future. ![]() The story had an adventure/mystery feel, but mostly it was about two men from different walks of life getting to know one another. It was exactly the type of relationship that I enjoy, with each man playing off one another in an enemies-to-lovers vibe with a heavy undercurrent of lust. I loved the contrast between Oliver's refinement and Jack's rougher, more worldly history. ![]() I have a particular weakness for MCs of differing classes in HR. This book had all the right ingredients, and the story was beautifully told. ![]() There is something about having everything be so period-perfect, so refined and formal yet so wickedly explicit, that just gets me going. In the past few years I've gone from reluctant historical romance reader to having historical romance be one of my favorite genres. ![]() Historical M/M lovers have a new author to watch! *Price drop to $0.99 at Amazon US, 10/31/16!*Ī lovely debut from Cat Sebastian. ![]() |
